Be Dreaming or Be Drifting

Scripture

"If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.” (Proverbs 29:18)

Thought

Dreaming is essential. In our latest episode of the Stay The Course Leadership Podcast we talked at length about why it’s essential for a leader to dream. At STC, we believe there are three types of dreams we all have regularly.

  1. The visions and images you have when you’re asleep (sleeping)

  2. The desires and ambitions you have when you’re awake (daydreaming)

  3. The desires and ambitions you were created to do (Purpose)

Most leaders don’t spend nearly enough time focusing on the desires and ambitions they were created to do.

Our dreams define our lives. Our dreams set the direction for our transformation.

But it’s not really the dream that transforms us. The dream merely invites us into the transformational journey.

Our culture is unfortunately mesmerized by the finish line. We are addicted to “arrival.” The mere mention of a dream triggers a response in us that says:

“WHEN we arrive THEN we’re transformed.”

“If I can just achieve my dream of getting that promotion…”

If we can just achieve our dream of retiring in the countryside..”

If we can just launch that company..”

“If I can just fulfill my dream of crossing the finish line of the marathon..”

The truth is, the real transformational power of dreaming isn’t in the finish line experience. It’s on the course. The journey. The rolling hills, the tough terrain, the aid stations, the internal doubts and fears. It’s in the struggle we’re transformed.

The dream merely invites us into the transformational journey. Where our skills are stretched, our core is tested, and our faith is renewed.

The glory isn’t in the finish line celebration - the dream coming to fruition. The glory is in the thousands of hidden conflicts when we become motivated to do the things we wouldn’t otherwise do if not for the compelling dream pulling us forward.

The journey transforms us. The dream motivates us to keep walking.

Be dreaming or be drifting.
