Remembrance is a High-Performance Super Habit
For years I’ve maintained the practice of taking “field notes”.
I’ve found it highly practical to take short hand notes of what I’m observing or experiencing in the moment to ensure I retain details that might have otherwise been forgotten.
When I started doing this I didn’t foresee the profound impact it would have on my faith, but I’ve since realized that the power of the field notes is not in the recall but in the remembrance.
In this issue, I will attest to the power of remembrance in growing and fortifying one's faith.
Remembrance is a High-Performance Super Habit
“The further backwards you can look, the further forwards you can see.” - Winston Churchill
Remembrance goes beyond simply recalling facts. It involves actively re-experiencing or re-engaging with past events, emotions, and lessons.
It can be personal… significant life experience.
It can be communal… remembering shared experiences or history.
It can be spiritual… becoming familiarized with divine wisdom.
In all instances, remembrance involves acknowledging the past's impact while reflecting on our present circumstances.
True clarity and conviction emerges from the type of intentional reflection that can come through the practice of remembrance.
The fruits for this practice don’t come linearly, the effects of remembrance are best appreciated over time in the form of fortified faith.
Faith is often associated with trust, belief, and confidence in something unseen or unproven.
Faith is the belief that things will work out even when you can’t see it yet or don’t quite have the answers.
Faith often evokes a sense of hope and encouragement.
Through my field notes I’ve been able to find evidence of past faithfulness when I've needed it most, many of which were subtle and would’ve likely been forgotten.
Reading notes taken from my own or others stories of courage, resilience, or compassion has inspired me to embody those values in my own life, strengthening my belief in their importance.
Stumbling across a bible verse in my field notes has helped me remember my place in a larger historical or spiritual narrative providing a sense of purpose and meaning, reinforcing my faith in something beyond myself.
By actively engaging with our past, we can find evidence and reassurance that supports our beliefs.
My field notes have served as a tool for remembrance providing a tangible foundation for the intangible quality of faith.
It is a process of witnessing, and then taking that witness, and allowing it to become a part of the foundation of my belief system.
Reflecting on my field notes has been a powerful reminder that our past experiences can shape our present beliefs and guide our future actions.
The connection between remembrance and faith is undeniably strong.
Whether it is through field notes or some other means, I encourage you to harness the power of remembrance to grow your faith.
Your future depends on it.
