Scripture
“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
Thought
As leaders we like to appear confident and competent in all situations. We want others to be impressed with how effortless we make everything look.
We put immense pressure on ourselves to ensure that those around us think we have everything under control. We think we must always be prepared and polished.
We believe struggling is not an option.
Most often we accomplish this by spending countless hours honing our skills “behind the scenes”, hiding our struggles, anxiously waiting to unveil the better version of ourselves next time we are called to center stage. We do this so we can consistently wow our colleagues, peers, and associates with our performance. We’re obsessed with being impressive.
This is a flawed approach to leadership. The motives are misplaced.
What good is a light that only shines when it’s ready to?
Transformational leadership is more persistence than performance. It’s about displaying our good deeds amidst the struggles of self-development and sanctification. In doing this our light is directed at our maker.
Shining on stage is good for us, shining in our struggles is good for the kingdom.
